What should you be thinking about during a solo?

When doing a solo you want to make sure that you have a focus otherwise you’ll be aimlessly hitting balls around.

This focus can be what you’re working on with your coach. Or if you aren’t working with a coach right now, let me give you a few things you can focus on:

  • Early racket prep

  • Moving your feet around the ball

  • Not letting your shoulders open up to the front wall

  • Getting lower in the back corners

  • Bending your knees when playing the ball

  • Controlled follow through

  • Open racket face

  • Spacing between your arm and your body

  • Contact point with the ball

How to structure a 30-minute solo

A really basic way of creating a solo plan you can follow in 30 minutes is to break down the time into thirds.

10 minutes practicing drives

10 minutes practicing volleys

10 minutes practicing drops

One tip I would give when performing this solo is to break it down even further into forehand and backhand. For example, 5 minutes forehand drives, 5 minutes forehand volleys, 5 minutes forehand drops, then move onto the backhand side and repeat.

By doing this, the ball won’t get as cold when doing your drops and you’ll be able to focus on your swing on one side of the court for a full 15 minutes.

Solo’s don’t just need to be hitting…

Getting on court and doing a solo doesn’t have to just be static hitting. You can also improve your movement during this time!

It can often get very repetitive and boring if you’re practicing the same shot over and over. It’s very energy sapping to focus for this long!

A good way to break up your solo is to do some ghosting throughout! This means you could do 10 minutes of solo (5 mins forehand drives, 5 mins backhand drives) followed by 5 minutes of ghosting (30 seconds on/ 30s seconds off x5).

You’ll be surprised at how quickly your movement will improve just by doing some ghosting in your training! You’ll feel much quicker on court and pick up way more balls in your matches, making you much harder to beat!
